It is not an easy time to be a journalist in Hong Kong but it is the time for those who are already or will be a journalist to study journalism necessarily. Most importantly, talk with your teachers, they would love to help you.

Journalism MA program is a solid bedrock for anyone who aspires to be an insightful, influential, ethical, and independent journalist. It has unleashed my potential by offering myriads of opportunities, ranging from talking directly with Bloomberg News’ founding editor Matthew Winkler, MIT Technology Review senior correspondents, Wall Street Journal top-notch journalists, and prominent media researchers specialized in visual, psychological, or political communication.
Combined with well-structured courses and seminars, these experiences enriched me not only as a young journalist but also as a person. It’s truly indelible to be a student here. Hopefully, I could come back from time to time.

The School of Journalism and Communication is a bastion to guard the ideals of Journalism. You’ll meet excellent teachers with a wealth of experience and a great passion for journalism here. You will not only learn from them the skills of newsgathering, writing and presenting, but also critical thinking and the code of media ethics, which are very important for a qualified journalist.

I have learned a lot from the programme, especially about how to tell stories in the media. The courses are well designed. All the instructors are well-equipped with both industry and theoretical knowledge and are committed to teaching. I highly recommend MA in Journalism at CUHK to interested students.

During my year in the MA in Journalism program, I connected with classmates who shared similar passions and built meaningful relationships with genuine and approachable teachers. Our lively discussions were free and inspiring. Beyond the classroom, my reporting pushed me to explore the rich diversity of Hong Kong, where I got to know wonderful people and their authentic lives. Courses in Journalism were always engaging and filled with practical insights. For me, each interview was an adventure into the unexpected—you never know who will share their story next, or the tales you’ll uncover. This required continuously seeking out key informants, honing questioning skills, and understanding structural factors behind events. The capability of adaptability and analytical thinking you developed here are invaluable in journalism and beyond. More importantly, those remarkable encounters and acts of kindness you experience can provide tremendous energy, empowering you to continue your journey through life.

MA in Journalism program as a life-changing experience for me because I found my mission here. The instruction in critical thinking, reporting and concern about the society will benefit me all through my career.

The MA in Journalism programme is about more than just learning the practical skills of journalists, like reporting news stories in Chinese, English, data, photos, audio and videos. It’s also about cultivating a journalistic perspective and mindset, equipping you with the ability to try to understand yourself, others and society with an open mind, even if you choose not to pursue a career in journalism. This programme helps me rethink my experience, discover my unique advantages and cherish my value. Interactions with classmates, teachers and fellow journalists have contributed to my personal growth, which makes me a more complete person.

In the end, thanks to the MA in Journalism programme, for its warm and kind welcome to childish idealists. May all of these idealists still embrace a continuous curiosity and concern about the world, even in a rapidly changing industry and increasingly divided society. Never turn your back on the world, close your mind, and give up your voice. And through action, there remain all kinds of possibilities.

This year at CUHK has truly been one of the most transformative times in my life. I’m really grateful to the MA in Journalism Programme for providing exceptional academic training and practical opportunities. It’s helped me grow into a more capable researcher and journalist.

What struck me most, beyond the knowledge I’ve gained, were the inspiring actions and positive attitudes of our professors. Their experiences and insights have given me so much encouragement and courage. They’ve shown me that while changing the world can be tough, we all have the power to make it a little better.

I am deeply grateful to the Journalism Program at The Chinese University of Hong Kong for the help and support it has provided me over the past year. The program’s curriculum effectively combines practical experience with theoretical knowledge, offering comprehensive training that ranges from critical thinking and basic news writing to the full process of reporting, editing, and filming. Even if you do not pursue a career in journalism in the future, the knowledge gained here will be of great benefit to you. The faculty members are friendly and approachable. They not only teach cutting-edge content related to Hong Kong but also strongly encourage students to explore Hong Kong’s local culture firsthand. Through this process, they helped us become familiar with Hong Kong and adapt quickly to the pace of study. Hope my younger peers will play hard and study hard.

This year in the MA in Journalism programme was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. With guidance from professors with extensive experience, I gained insights into the industry that reached far beyond the classroom. From pitching story ideas and conducting street interviews to refining reports, I experienced journalism as a real journalist would. Before entering the professional world, the programme deepened my understanding of journalism’s ideals and realities while strengthening my resilience, curiosity, and critical thinking, which will continue to guide me in my future career.
